About This Tour

After a one-hour flight over the foothills and inland farming country, explore Wave Rock in the cool of the morning, before the crowds arrive on their long bus trips. You’ll also see the curious Hippo’s Yawn and have time for morning tea, souvenirs and the local wildlife park and museums.

Then fly to Cervantes, a small fishing town, for a tour of the Pinnacles Desert – limestone pillars unlike anything else on earth. Finally, fly over the Pinnacles and the inaccessible Dead Pinnacles and along endless beaches back to Perth.

Discover Wave Rock

About 340 km east of Perth near the town of Hyden, Wave Rock is a 15-metre-high, 110-metre-long granite cliff shaped exactly like a breaking ocean wave. It’s part of Hyden Rock, formed from granite around 2.7 billion years old, and its curve was created by weathering below the ground before the surrounding soil eroded away.

Vertical streaks of mineral-stained rock give the wave its bands of grey, ochre and red. The area has deep cultural significance for the local Noongar people, and nearby rock formations carry stories and art that go back thousands of years.

Must-See in Wave Rock

  • Wave Rock – walk beneath the curl of the wave
  • The walk to the top of Hyden Rock
  • Hippo’s Yawn – a rock shaped like a yawning hippo
  • Mulka’s Cave – ancient Aboriginal hand stencils
  • The colourful salt lakes of the Wheatbelt – seen from the air

Discover The Pinnacles Desert (Nambung National Park)

In Nambung National Park near Cervantes, thousands of limestone pillars – some up to 3.5 metres tall – rise from bright yellow sand. They formed from ancient seashells that broke down into lime-rich sand, were cemented into limestone, and were later exposed as the sand blew away.

Walking among them feels otherworldly, and seeing them from the air reveals just how vast the field is. Nearby, Lake Thetis is home to stromatolites, living structures similar to some of the earliest life on Earth.

Must-See in The Pinnacles Desert

  • The Pinnacles Desert walk trail
  • The Dead Pinnacles – visible only from the air
  • Lake Thetis stromatolites near Cervantes
  • The Turquoise Coast’s beaches and dunes
