Depart Darwin on a scenic flight across the Northern Territory coastline and into Western Australia’s Kimberley. The Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park is one of Australia’s most extraordinary landforms – hundreds of orange-and-black striped sandstone domes shaped over some 350 million years. The bands come from layers of iron oxide and dark cyanobacteria in the rock. Although Gija and Jaru people have known this Country for tens of thousands of years, the range was barely known to the wider world until the 1980s. It was World Heritage listed in 2003.

Seeing the domes from the air reveals the true scale of the massif, while walking among them takes you into hidden chasms and natural amphitheatres that are cool, quiet and full of stories.

Lake Argyle was created in the early 1970s when the Ord River was dammed near Kununurra. Today it’s one of Australia’s largest freshwater lakes, scattered with more than 70 islands and home to tens of thousands of freshwater crocodiles, rare wallabies and huge numbers of waterbirds.

The surrounding country is classic Kimberley – rugged red ranges, winding gorges and ancient landscapes. Nearby, the former Argyle mine was once the world’s main source of rare pink diamonds.
