Just over 100 km south of Darwin, Litchfield National Park is centred on the Tabletop Range – a vast sandstone plateau whose springs feed a string of spectacular waterfalls that flow all year round. It’s one of the Top End’s most loved parks, and from the air you can see how the falls tumble off the plateau edge into monsoon-forest gorges.

Litchfield is also famous for its termite mounds. The ‘magnetic’ mounds are aligned north–south to control their temperature, while the giant cathedral mounds can tower several metres high. Out on the plateau, the weathered sandstone pillars of the Lost City look like the ruins of an ancient town.
