About This Tour
Hop aboard your own aircraft – everyone gets a window seat – and fly over the Perth escarpment, farmland, bush and colourful lakes to the outback. Sit beneath the giant formation of Wave Rock, then take a short walk to Hippo’s Yawn, a rock that looks just like a hippo’s open mouth.
Next, fly over the painted landscape of the Wheatbelt and along the West Australian coast before veering out over the Indian Ocean to Rottnest Island. After taking in the view from the air, land on the island to relax, swim or meet the local quokkas. A final flight past Fremantle and the Swan River brings you back to Jandakot.
Discover Wave Rock
About 340 km east of Perth near the town of Hyden, Wave Rock is a 15-metre-high, 110-metre-long granite cliff shaped exactly like a breaking ocean wave. It’s part of Hyden Rock, formed from granite around 2.7 billion years old, and its curve was created by weathering below the ground before the surrounding soil eroded away.
Vertical streaks of mineral-stained rock give the wave its bands of grey, ochre and red. The area has deep cultural significance for the local Noongar people, and nearby rock formations carry stories and art that go back thousands of years.
Must-See in Wave Rock
- Wave Rock – walk beneath the curl of the wave
- The walk to the top of Hyden Rock
- Hippo’s Yawn – a rock shaped like a yawning hippo
- Mulka’s Cave – ancient Aboriginal hand stencils
- The colourful salt lakes of the Wheatbelt – seen from the air
Discover Rottnest Island (Wadjemup)
Rottnest Island, known as Wadjemup to the Whadjuk Noongar people, lies 18 km off Fremantle. It’s car-free, ringed by 63 beaches and 20 bays, and fringed by some of the clearest water on the West Australian coast.
It’s also the best place on earth to meet a quokka. In 1696, Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh mistook the little marsupials for large rats and named the island ‘Rotte nest’ – rat’s nest. From the air you’ll also see the island’s pink salt lakes, reefs and historic lighthouse.
Must-See in Rottnest Island
- Quokkas – Rottnest’s famously friendly locals
- The Basin and Pinky Beach – perfect for swimming and snorkelling
- Wadjemup Lighthouse
- Cape Vlamingh and the island’s west end
- The pink salt lakes – best seen from above
